Southern Heritage and White Unity advocates reject recognition of Lincoln.

About 10 protesters, several carrying Confederate flags, stood across the street from the Tredegar Iron Works, where a cocktail reception was held for people attending last night’s Lincoln Prize awards ceremony.

The prize honors the year’s best book on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War era. This was the first time the ceremony took place in the South.

The protesters were there to signal their opposition to any recognition of Lincoln as a “slap in the face” to their Confederate heritage.

“Lincoln was a war criminal. He’s no man to celebrate,” said Ron Doggett, a spokesman for the group, which he said included representatives of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the League of the South and the European-American Unity and Rights Organization.

Harold Holzer, who took second place in this year’s Lincoln Prize competition, said the presence of the protesters saddened him but did not concern him greatly.
