10,000 tons of garbage monthly.
In opposition to international law, Israel plans to dump 10,000 tons of garbage in the West Bank (pictured) each month, jeopardizing the lives of Palestinians through contaminated water sources.
The garbage will be transferred from the Dan and Sharon regions and then deposited in the Abu Shusa quarry. Israeli bulldozers and construction equipment have begun preparations for the transfer by covering the quarry’s floor with soil.
Initial plans for the quarry renovation began when a private business started filling a 15-dunam plot with leftover building items, junk and shredded tires. Eventually the waste spread over a dozen dunams containing household garbage. Israelis say it is much more efficient to dump waste in the West Bank than to haul trash back to Israel, and that the quarry is profitable for Israeli businesses who report yields in the millions of shekels.
Experts and human rights advocates believe the quarry is a toxic waste area that jeopardizes the Mountain Aquifer, a large freshwater source for Palestinians.
