The most reliable casualty website for the Iraq War -the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count- has announced that the US death toll in Iraq has hit 1,993. The casualty rate for the first half of October was almost three deaths per day. This means we are only two or three days from hitting the milestone figure of 2,000.
The British death toll has stood at 97 for some time now. Opposition to the war in Britain is much stronger and there will likely be anti-war rallies when their death toll hits 100.
The peace movement in America has shown considerable strength since Cindy Sheehan’s peace vigil and a backlash among ordinary Americans over the shameful dispect shown her by heartless chickenhawk neocons. An anti-war rally in Washington DC (which followed Cindy’s peace vigil in Crawford) attracted over 100,000 people. The 2,000 milestone will inspire more mass protests against the war.
