It’s long been common knowledge that the promises made by military recruiters are worthless. They’ll promise some kid the moon, all kinds of technical training, his choice of duty station, all kinds of bonuses, you name it. The problem is that in the papers the would-be recruit signs, there is what amounts to an “It’s all BS” clause, which gives the Army the right to send the young recruit anywhere they want and assign him to any unit, in accordance with what is known as “exigent needs of the service.” Needless to say, recruiters very seldom point out this fine print. (A word to unemployed kids: if you MUST enlist try the Coast Guard and then the Air Force; these are the safest of the military services.)

But something else has been added to the Army recruiter’s arsenal. More and more cases are being reported from around the country wherein recruiting sergeants have told the high school graduates they’re pitching: “You’d better enlist now, because there’s a draft coming next year, and if you wait to get drafted you’ll have no choice at all about what branch of the service you get dragged into and where you’ll be sent. And you KNOW where you’ll be sent…”
The first kids to report this were from the Philadelphia area, but now other stories like this are starting to come out on the Internet and in underground publications of various kinds. Expect this story to hit the mainstream news soon.
The White House and the Pentagon, of course, are still vowing and swearing on a stack of Bibles that there are no plans for a draft. Oh, really? Two years ago, the Selective Service System (which has never been disbanded even after the draft was abolished in 1972) began a crash program to rebuild the local and regional draft boards, many of which were unmanned and had been allowed to fall into disuse.
Think about it. Dubya is now making noises about attacking Iran and Syria. Where, exactly, does he intend to get the troops to do that? We don’t even have enough to hold down Iraq and Afghanistan. The Taliban are now operating freely again in Afghanistan and we all know how Iraq has turned into a quagmire.
So what do those recruiters know that the rest of us don’t?
