Israeli spy is a hero in the “Holy Land.”
Israel will take “concrete” steps to try to bring about the release of Jonathan Pollard, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said Monday. He added that Ambassador to the US Danny Ayalon is scheduled to meet Pollard, serving a life sentence for spying for Israel, in prison next week.
Shalom said it was decided that influential Israelis will visit him. “In principle, our opinion is that 20 years is a long period, perhaps too long, and the time has come for him to be released and come to Israel as a new immigrant.”
Shalom’s statement came a day after he petitioned the High Court of Justice demanding that Pollard be recognized as a Prisoner of Zion, a move aimed at putting more pressure on the government to secure his release.
