Do you still feel that way now?

I had lived 10 years married to a woman who had no concept of frugality after I was left with nothing but debt and forced to file bankruptcy when she decided to find herself I began to slowly rebuild my life but I had a very difficult time meeting anyone that advocated a frugal life style. I was to say the least, considered odd, by most of my peers. I work in a very politically conservative company and basically keep my mouth shut and do my job and chuckle inwardly when I hear the constant complaints of people living month to month with no savings that make substantially over 100K a year. Well while on a consulting job I met a wonderful Chinese Lady who had been in the States for 10 years. She was gorgeous smart and a kindred spirit in frugality. I think we have forgotten how tough it can get in this country. My Dad grew up in the depression and told many stories of how normal people starved in the streets and Mid West Farmers were discussing armed rebellion. The only debt we have is our house . We have good savings and live a simple lifestyle and are very happy. She grew up in China during the Cultural Revolution so she know how crazy the world can get quickly.

Enough rambling a couple of points I have learned and learned from her about surviving hard times.

All of the above items mention are true but a key item is that in tough times you cannot make it alone. The idea of living out in rural area in a individualist type of Thereou - esk type of existence sound appealing but is not practical. You need to be part of a group that will shelter and protect you. Carefully pick which group. There are groups of survivalists. These can be pretty iffy sometimes and there are religious groups such a Mormons and some Christian Denominations that can offer safe haven. If you are the type of person that can either share the believe or not be so amused or outraged by some of the dogmas then they can be a support and possible safe haven. This may sound terrible to some people but when it is survival at stake there are many must worse scarifies.

An the obvious know how to grow and preserve food. A little cabbage, tomatoes and eggs can go a long way.

I came across your site while Googling "depression survival." I'd like to throw in a few things if I may: gardening, hunting, fishing, and generally learning to practice kitchen frugality--this means learning and practicing home economics (you know, the stuff they quit teaching when the microwave came out).

If you or anyone else were to go to "frugal living" websites, you can learn more about how millions of us are already (sort of) ready to survive the coming depression--topics are even covered until they're driven into the ground and the hole barked at. I myself covered a number of these topics in the early days of my blog.

We frugalites learned long ago that to make it intact is to be debt-free, money-smart, and to make it from scratch yourself if possible.

It's tough to see so many young adults in so much debt, and much of it needless, due to knee-jerk reactions to desire, poor money management skills, and an over-reliance on convenience. I suppose they'll learn yet another lesson the hard way--as if bankruptcy isn't enough!

After the depression is over, they'll come out the other side as better adults--hell, we'll ALL come out as other people. Who knows what else this coming depression will bring afterward? Look at all the wonderful things that came after the LAST one!

I can't wait to find out--maybe there will be a true solution to the oil thing, and energy consumption in general. Maybe obesity will become a thing of the past, all will pretty much all disease. Maybe a cure for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's will be forthcoming. Hell, maybe we'll get back into space.
